SUMMARY:Workshop: Incorporating Art in the Work with Children – Expressive Arts Therapy to Support Neurodivergent Newcomer Children
DESCRIPTION:Expressive arts therapy has shown benefits for children across various developmental stages\, as well as neurodiverse children who may struggle with traditional classroom settings and communication barriers. It allows for self-expression without the need for words\, reduces overstimulation\, and soothes the nervous systems\, encourages creativity and collaboration\, and provides a calming and structured activity that empowers children to utilize their creativity and build on their strengths. \nThis workshop will examine the advantages of expressive arts therapy that can be applied to newcomer children from early years to school age\, who face unique challenges due to the complex emotions that may arise during their journey of settling into a new community or school. It will be an opportunity for those who work with newcomer children in the settlement sector to learn about how incorporating art and concepts of expressive arts therapy can support their work. \nAs there will be experiential pieces in this workshop\, we invite you to prepare the following basic art materials if you wish to participate in the activities:\n• Paper for writing or a journal\n• Pens/pencils for writing\n• Basic art materials (paper\, pastels\, markers\, pencil crayons) \n  \nTo register\, click here

DESCRIPTION:Is your newcomer-serving organization in BC looking for ways to support young people with their mental health? \nAre your mental health and wellness staff looking for more resources to support young people who are newcomers and experiencing anxiety? \nThe YMCA is looking to partner with newcomer-serving organizations to pilot a delivery of YMCA Y Mind Newcomers\, an eight-week\, early-intervention\, newcomer-informed\, mental wellness program for newcomer young people experiencing anxiety. Our non-profit clients have seen transformative benefits through this guided self-assessment process. Members of our consulting team will work with you to build a Capacity Enhancement Plan for your organization. \nWe define capacity as the health of your organization in five areas:​ \n\nPrograms​\nGovernance​\nBusiness model​\nManagement​\nAdministrative Systems​\n\nSuggested participants: A few team members who want to conduct a deep review of your organization. This can include senior staff (Executive Directors\, CEOs\, general managers\, etc.) and non-profit board members. \nImportant note! Capacity Development Lab includes space for up to four individuals from your organization to participate.
