SUMMARY:The Walrus Talks at Home: Polarization
DESCRIPTION:Polarization is on the rise in Western democracies and Canada is not immune. Politicians and public figures are intensifying their rhetoric and wedge issues are becoming the norm in political\, social\, and cultural conversations. The impact? An erosion of trust in our democracy and institutions. \nAt The Walrus Talks at Home: Polarization\, four experts will dive into how social media amplifies “rage-bait” and dis/misinformation. We’ll also look at how the COVID-19 pandemic widened political divisions about health and science policies. In the closing days of a year that saw more than half the world’s population go to the polls\, and in the lead up to an expected federal election\, don’t miss this urgent discussion about what divides us and how Canadians can find common ground. \nJoin us for The Walrus Talks at Home: Polarization to examine the impacts and possible solutions for our increasing political\, social\, and cultural divide. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Community Event: Virtual Information Session: Mental Health and Wellness for International Post-Secondary Students
DESCRIPTION:In this Virtual Information Session\, frontline staff will learn about the mental health challenges that International Post-Secondary students face\, and actions that can promote wellness. Speakers will include representatives from settlement service organizations and post-secondary institutions who will share their multi-faceted experiences that are applicable to all types of service providers. \nMental health challenges can threaten International Post-Secondary students’ well-being\, jeopardizing their current academic and future aspirations. Financial stressors can be challenging\, with rising tuition\, food and housing costs exacerbating the number of international students living in unsuitable housing and/or accessing food banks.  As full-time studies are a requirement for a work permit\, it is difficult to balance academics with needed work hours.  Additionally\, as with many newcomers\, International Post-Secondary Students face culture shock and social isolation\, as well as worries about their families or conflicts back in their home country.
