Amplifying Your Voice: Speaking Up for Social Change – Town Hall for Youth

March 27, 2021

VIRTUAL

Learn how to amplify your voice to help achieve a welcome and inclusive Surrey, where everyone can thrive.

Do you want to be involved in decisions being made about you, your community and the future of your city? Are you aware of how to use your voice in order to push for systems of change*?

If you’re curious, want to share and hear others’ stories, and are between the ages of 16 to 25, we invite you to join our virtual town hall, March 27 at 4 pm.

We will talk about understanding and acknowledging the different types of privilege we bring and how this can impact our ideas and experiences. Our town hall will be an open space for you(th) to hear and talk about social location**, identity, privilege and using one’s voice to amplify their message, and how to ensure we don’t speak for others.

Sneak peak at what you will talk about:

1. What are all the forces that help create our identities?

2. Finding your unique voice — what’s your story?

3. Using our voice to push for systems of change*

What are systems of change? *

Attempting to change unjust societal issues to create a more equitable system by first identifying and addressing the root causes for those issues within society.

What is social location?**

An individual’s social location is defined as the combination of factors including gender, race, social class, age, ability, religion, sexual orientation and geographic location. This makes social location particular to each individual; that is, social location is not always exactly the same for any two individuals.

What is social change?

Social change can be defined as the way in which human exchanges, relationships, behaviours and culture change over time.
