With the Surrey LIP being re-convened by DIVERSEcity, the new Project Management team is being led by Mariam Bilgrami (she/hers). She will be coordinating the Surrey LIP activities with the support of Laura Mannix, Director of Community Development DIVERSEcity, an administrative and marketing assistant, community partners and consultants who will be engaged for research, evaluation and projects. The vision for the Surrey LIP is a collaborative, community partnership convened to strengthen local capacity to welcome and increase belonging amongst immigrants and refugees in Surrey, BC.
Mariam comes to the role with an international and diverse background. She is a Pakistani-Canadian with 20 years of experience in social work and international and community development. She has worked in the settlement sector with immigrants, newcomers and refugees for several years and, most recently, co-founded and led a project that provides pathways to equitable leadership positions with the purpose of including diverse migrant and newcomer voices at decision-making tables. She is also a certified Intercultural Diversity Practitioner who passionately advocates for social justice in all aspects of her life. Mariam feels fortunate to be able to live and work on the unceded lands of the Coast Salish peoples while striving toward a more just society.
