Immigrant Advisory Round Table

The Surrey LIP Committee identified the need to have the voice and input of Surrey immigrants and refugees included in its research and planning processes and expanded its governance structure to include the direct participation of newcomers. As a result, the Surrey Immigrant Advisory Roundtable (IAR) was formed in December 2014.

The Surrey  IAR is a group of 18 immigrants and refugees who live and/or work in Surrey. The members of the IAR come from 16 different countries, different immigration classes and professional backgrounds and have demonstrated high level of community engagement in Surrey.

The Immigrant Advisory Roundtable members review research and community consultation findings and provide their insights to further shape the Strategic Plans. Additionally, the IAR members will act as Cultural Ambassadors of the project , i.e. helping the Surrey LIP to reach out to local ethnic communities. Another goal of the IAR is to develop and enhance leadership capacity within the Surrey immigrant community. The IAR members are provided with opportunities to participate and initiate new community projects that enhance connections between immigrant and Canadian-born residents in Surrey.

Three members were elected to be Co-Chairs Surrey IAR. The Co-Chairs rotate in attending the Surrey LIP Committee meetings. The IAR meets 5-6 times a year from January 2015 to March 2016.
