Surrey Refugee Youth Planning Team hosts Newcomer Youth Conference
Monday, March 20, 2017

On March 18, 2017, the Surrey Refugee Youth Planning Team hosted the “Newcomer Youth Voices: Surrey Leadership Conference”. This conference brought together newcomer youth from Surrey between the ages of 15 and 25 to connect, share, learn, and grow.

Over 60 youth attended the event at City Hall and listened to keynote speakers Jorge Salazar and Steve Dooley. Breakout sessions included hearing from community leaders' work with the Sanctuary Cities Movement and the Somali Youth Association of BC; learning about indigenous communities, the history of the land and what it means to be an ally; and brainstorming community project ideas in order to apply for community grants.

The day was full of new learnings, interesting discussions, cultural exchange, and delicious food. It also included a cultural fashion show and dancing during lunchtime! Look for more events like this in the coming months as the Surrey LIP continues to support newcomer youth!
